About Incubator Guide

Independent, practical hatching guides for backyard flocks, classrooms and homesteads, kept consistent with university extension sources and updated on a schedule.

What Incubator Guide is

Incubator Guide is an independent website about hatching eggs at home. We publish species-specific guides for chicken, duck, quail, goose and turkey eggs: exact incubator settings, day-by-day development, candling, troubleshooting, breed comparisons and incubator recommendations. The site is written for backyard flock keepers, teachers running classroom hatches, 4-H families and homesteaders.

Our aim is simple: give you the right number quickly, explain why it matters, and help you fix things when a hatch doesn't go to plan. If you're new, start with how to hatch eggs in an incubator or browse the blog.

Who writes the guides

Every page is written and maintained by the Incubator Guide Editorial Team. We are a small team, and we don't attach invented names, credentials or personal stories to our pages. What we can promise is a consistent method: every guide is built from published university extension and 4-H embryology materials, cross-checked across pages, and reviewed on a schedule.

Editorial standards

We follow a few rules on every page:

  • Authoritative sources. Incubation periods, temperatures, humidity targets and turning schedules come from university extension and 4-H embryology resources, including Penn State Extension 4-H Embryology, the University of Kentucky's Development of the Chick, Virginia Cooperative Extension, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Merck Veterinary Manual. Guides list their sources at the end.
  • One set of numbers. We keep a single reference sheet of core facts, such as 99.5°F (37.5°C) in a forced-air incubator and 21 days for chicken eggs, so every page gives the same answer. Where sources disagree, we say so and give the range.
  • Visible dates. Every page shows when it was published and last updated.
  • No invented experience. We don't publish made-up reader stories, testimonials or survey numbers.
  • Corrections welcome. If you spot an error, reply to any of our newsletter emails and tell us. We review every correction and update the page if it holds up.

Our guides cover general husbandry. For a sick or injured bird, please contact a veterinarian.

How we choose products

Our incubator recommendations are based on research, not hands-on lab testing. Before every update, we re-check each pick for:

  • Availability: whether it is actually in stock and shipping.
  • Ratings volume: whether a large number of buyer ratings back up the average score.
  • Core features: automatic turning, automatic turner stop for lockdown, humidity monitoring, and a capacity that suits home hatching.

Our last full re-check was on October 6, 2026. When a pick goes out of stock or stops meeting these criteria, we replace it. For example, the KEBONNIXS 12 was replaced by the APDOE 12-egg incubator in October 2026, and the Magicfly Mini was replaced by the VEVOR 12 in July 2026.

Affiliate disclosure

Incubator Guide is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. When you buy through a link on our site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Commissions never influence which products we recommend or how we rank them. A product earns a place on the page by meeting the criteria above, and loses it the same way. We don't publish prices because they change often; the retailer's page always shows the current price.
